Garage Door Installation From Electra Overhead Doors

Your garage door is the biggest moving part of your home. Picking the wrong one means living with squeaks, drafts, and a door that breaks in five years instead of twenty. We install garage doors across Greater Boston, southern New Hampshire, and northern Rhode Island. We measure, we install, we haul away your old door, and we make sure the opener works before we leave.

Call (781) 456-0766 and we can usually be at your house in Cambridge, Newton, Arlington, Somerville, or anywhere along the Route 128 belt within the same day.

What You Should Know About Garage Door Installation

Helpful information about the service, the process and what to expect when working with our team.

01

Why homeowners in MA, NH, and RI call us for new doors

New England winters are hard on garage doors. Salt eats steel from below. Nor'easters bend panels. A door that worked fine in a Texas catalog falls apart by year three up here. We install insulated steel doors, custom carriage-house wood, and aluminum full-view doors that hold up to coastal weather and freezing temps. Every door we install is wind-rated for our zone and comes with a manufacturer warranty plus our labor warranty on top.

02

What a real installation looks like

A garage door install is not a two-hour job done out of a van. We arrive on time. We measure the rough opening, header, and headroom. We balance and tension the springs so the door lifts evenly. We mount the opener, set the safety sensors, test the auto-reverse, and walk you through the remotes and keypad. Then we clean up. You should not be sweeping screws off your driveway after we leave.

03

Brands we install (and why it matters)

We are an authorized LiftMaster and Chamberlain dealer for openers, and we install Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, and Genie doors. Buying from an authorized dealer means warranty work comes through us, parts are in stock, and you do not get a generic import door slapped on your house. If you live in a historic neighborhood like Newton Centre or Brookline, we can match a carriage-house style to your home without losing the modern hardware underneath.

04

How fast can you get this done?

Standard residential doors are usually in stock or available within a week. Custom wood doors and oversized commercial doors run two to four weeks. Most installs are done in one day. If your old door is hanging by a thread and you need it gone today, call us. We can often do a temporary fix and put the new door on the calendar.

Questions About Garage Door Installation

Helpful answers to common questions about this garage door service.

A basic insulated steel single-car door installed runs about $1,200 to $1,800 in our area. A double-car insulated door installed runs $1,800 to $3,200. Custom carriage-house wood, full-view aluminum, or oversized commercial doors can run $4,000 to $10,000 or more. Prices include the door, hardware, labor, haul-away of the old door, and a new opener if you need one. We give you a written estimate before any work starts, and we do not change the price on you halfway through. Call us at (781) 456-0766 for a quote on your exact opening size and style.

A single-car door installation takes about three to four hours. A double-car door takes four to six hours. Custom installs that involve a new opener, new tracks, or framing repair can take a full day. We schedule one install per crew per day so we are not rushing to get to the next house. If you need an opener installed at the same time, that adds about an hour. We test the door, the opener, the safety sensors, and the remotes before we pack up, and we walk you through how it all works.

In Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island, insulated is almost always the right answer. If your garage is attached to your house, an insulated door keeps cold air out of the rooms above the garage and cuts your heating bill. If you use your garage as a workshop, gym, or storage for anything temperature-sensitive, insulated is a must. Non-insulated steel doors are fine for detached garages where you only park cars. The cost difference is usually $200 to $400, and most homeowners make it back in heating savings within two winters.

Yes. Removal and haul-away is included in our standard install price. We disconnect the old opener, unbolt the panels, remove the tracks and springs, and load it all into our truck before we start on the new door. We recycle the steel and dispose of the rest properly. You do not need to do anything except clear a path from the garage to the driveway. If you want to keep your old opener as a backup, just tell us and we will leave it in the corner.

Standard single-car doors are 8 or 9 feet wide by 7 feet tall. Standard double-car doors are 16 feet wide by 7 feet tall. Newer homes in places like Newton, Lexington, and parts of Cambridge sometimes have 8-foot tall doors for trucks and SUVs. We measure your rough opening when we come for the estimate, because the actual door size depends on the framing, not just the existing door. If you are not sure what you have, send us a photo and we can usually tell.

Yes, and this is one of the things we handle a lot in towns like Newton, Brookline, Lexington, and parts of Arlington and Medford where historic preservation matters. We install carriage-house doors that look like swing-out wood doors from the outside but operate as modern sectional doors. If your town has historic district rules, we can match the look while still meeting current safety codes. Bring us a photo of the existing door and any rules from your historic commission, and we will show you compliant options.

Yes if you choose a LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener with MyQ, which we install most often. You get an app on your phone that lets you open and close the door from anywhere, see when family members come and go, and get alerts if the door is left open. We set it up on your phone before we leave. It also works with Google Home, Alexa, and (with a paid subscription) Apple HomeKit through specific bridges. Older openers without MyQ can be retrofitted with an add-on for about $50.

A quality steel door installed correctly lasts 20 to 30 years in our climate. The springs and cables wear out faster, usually 10 to 15 years for residential springs, sooner if you open the door many times per day. The opener motor typically lasts 10 to 15 years. Wood doors need more maintenance and last 15 to 25 years if you keep them sealed against weather. The hardware on a well-installed door outlasts most homeowners' time in the house, which is why getting the install right matters more than saving a few hundred dollars up front.
