A standard chain drive LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener installed runs $450 to $650. A belt drive (quieter) runs $550 to $800. A wall-mount direct-drive runs $850 to $1,200. Add $150 to $200 for battery backup, $50 for an extra remote, and about $100 if your existing reinforcement bracket needs to be replaced. Price includes opener, rail, sensors, two remotes, keypad, and MyQ setup. No "hidden bracket fee" or surprise add-ons.

About an hour to an hour and a half for a standard replacement where the existing reinforcement is good. Closer to two hours if we need to install new reinforcement, replace the wall outlet, or run new wire to the sensors. We test the door balance, set the travel limits, calibrate the safety reverse, set up MyQ on your phone, and walk you through everything before we leave.

Technically yes - they're sold at Home Depot and Lowe's. Practically, most homeowners who try this end up either calling us to finish the job or living with an opener that's slightly off in ways that wear the door out faster. The travel limits, force settings, and safety reverse calibration are not intuitive and getting them wrong can damage the door or, worse, fail to reverse when something is under the door. The install isn't expensive enough to be worth the risk for most people.

Could be either. Chain drive openers are inherently loud, especially when the chain stretches with age. Worn-out rollers make a separate, gritty noise as the door moves. Hinges that haven't been lubricated squeak. We come out, run the door, and tell you whether replacing the opener will solve the noise or whether you also need rollers and a lube service. Often a new belt drive opener plus nylon rollers takes a door from "wakes up the baby" to "you can't hear it from the kitchen."

Probably not, but we provide new remotes (usually two) with the install at no extra charge. If you have a built-in HomeLink button in your car, we program that for you before we leave - all current LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers work with HomeLink in any vehicle made in the last 20 years. If you have an older car with HomeLink, we walk you through the (slightly different) older programming sequence.

MyQ is the smart-home platform from LiftMaster and Chamberlain. It lets you control and monitor your garage door from your phone anywhere in the world. The base features (open, close, see status, get alerts) are free. There's no subscription required for basic operation. Some integrations (like Amazon Key for in-garage delivery) are free, others (like HomeKit through a third-party bridge) require a small fee. For most homeowners, the base free features alone are worth it. We set it up on your phone as part of the install.

Only if you choose the battery backup option, which we strongly recommend. Without battery backup, you'll need to pull the manual release rope and operate the door by hand. With battery backup, you get about 20 cycles on a fully charged battery, which is enough to get you through almost any outage. The battery lasts 3 to 5 years and we can replace it when it's time. In coastal areas like Hingham, Plymouth, and Gloucester, where storm outages are more common, battery backup is more or less essential.

A quality LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener lasts 10 to 15 years on average. Belt drives tend to last slightly longer than chain drives because they don't stretch. The motor itself often outlives the electronics - the logic board and sensors usually go first. Once you're past 10 years, when the opener starts acting up, replacement is almost always more economical than chasing parts. We can repair or replace, and we tell you straight which one makes sense.
