Nine times out of ten, it's a broken torsion spring. You'll usually hear a loud bang when it snaps, like a gunshot. If you look up at the bar above the door, you'll see a gap in the spring coil. Do not try to lift the door manually if a spring is broken. The door weighs 150 to 300 pounds and the cables are under tension. Call us and we will replace the spring (usually both springs at the same time if it's a double-spring system) and have you back in business the same day.

Spring replacement runs $250 to $450 for one spring including labor, or $350 to $600 for a pair if you have two springs. Cable replacement runs $180 to $300. Opener gear replacement runs $200 to $350. Roller replacement runs $150 to $250 for a full set of ten. Sensor alignment is often a no-charge add-on during another service call. If you have two springs and one broke, replace both. They were installed together, they have the same cycle count, and the second one will fail within months. Replacing the second one preventively costs about $100 more during the same visit. Replacing it as a separate service call later costs about $300. We always quote both and let you decide. If you only have one spring on your door, just replace the one.

Usually it's the safety sensors. They're the little eyes on each side of the door near the floor. If they're bumped out of alignment, blocked by a leaf or a spider web, or unplugged, the opener will refuse to close the door as a safety measure. Look at the sensors. If one is blinking and one is solid, they're misaligned. Tighten the brackets and gently aim them at each other until both lights are solid. If that doesn't fix it, the sensor wire may be damaged or the logic board in the opener may have failed. Both are easy fixes for us.

If the dent is cosmetic, yes. If the dent is deep enough that the panel is creased or bent through the steel, no. A creased panel can fail under tension and drop the door. Worse, it can throw the door off the tracks. If you backed into your door and there's a visible bend across the panel, stop using the door and call us. We can usually replace one or two panels rather than the whole door if the rest is in good shape, which saves you significant money over a full replacement.

Most loud doors are loud because the rollers are worn out and the hinges and tracks haven't been lubricated in years. Replacing steel rollers with nylon rollers and lubricating the hinges, springs, and bearing plates makes most doors run almost silently. If you can hear your garage door from inside the house, especially in a bedroom over the garage, this is a 30-minute, $250 fix that you will be grateful for every morning.

Standard residential springs are rated for 10,000 cycles. One cycle is one open and one close. If your family opens the door four times a day, that's about seven years. If you open it ten times a day (teenagers, work-from-home, dog walks), you'll see five to six years. High-cycle springs rated at 20,000 or 30,000 cycles cost about 50% more and last twice as long. We recommend high-cycle springs for any house where the garage door is the main entry, which is most houses we work on.
